Recognising Local Talent – SAF Gibraltar Students Prize 2024

The Sovereign Art Foundation (SAF) Gibraltar hosted its inspiring Students Prize 2024 Awards Ceremony last week in Xapo Bank’s stunning courtyard.
A statement from Sovereign Art Foundation Gibraltar follows below:
With 104 entries submitted by secondary school students aged 11-18, the Prize continues to highlight the remarkable creativity nurtured in Gibraltar’s schools and the essential role of arts education.
The Judge’s Prize was awarded to Zoe Payas for her evocative oil pastel piece, Sanctuaries of Light. Zoe, a student at Bayside Comprehensive School, receives £800 and £2,000 for her school’s art department. Unable to attend the event, Zoe’s teacher, Karl Ullger, accepted the award on her behalf. Zoe expressed her gratitude: “This recognition means so much to me and inspires me to pursue my passion for art. I’m honoured to have been part of such a talented group of students. Thank you to my teacher, the judges, and the Sovereign Art Foundation for this amazing opportunity.”
The Public Vote Prize was claimed by Eve Abudarham, whose photograph, Staring into the Eye, was inspired by her sister’s bright green eyes. Eve, from Prior Park School, shared her excitement: “I feel overwhelmed at winning. My teacher encouraged me throughout the process, and I’m so grateful for her guidance. This experience has been incredible, and I’m excited to participate in more competitions!” Eve’s win secures her £400 and £1,000 for her school’s art department, supporting future creative endeavours.
Max Masey, a Bayside Comprehensive student, received the Simmons Gainsford Prize for his digital artwork, La Sombra Del Deseo. Max, inspired by Rosalía’s El Mal Querer, commented: “My teacher encouraged me to enter this piece, and I’m so glad I did! I’m thrilled to have won and grateful for the opportunity to share my work.” Max’s win includes £250 for himself and £250 for his school’s art department.
The Fortress House Prize went to Aimee Linares for her captivating painting, La Calle Comedia. Aimee explained, “My family used to live on Calle Comedia, and I thought it would be a great area to paint. I painted this two years ago but only recently had the confidence to share it. Winning this award has been an incredible experience, and I’m so grateful to the judges for their support!” Aimee was awarded £200, with an additional £200 going to her school. Judge Henry Little praised the piece: “This technically accomplished work invites viewers to explore its eerie, intriguing quality, showcasing exceptional talent.”
