Cairns Cup Delegation Visits Gibraltar Ahead Of San Roque Tournament

Representatives from the Cairns Cup were in Gibraltar last week to continue preparations for the upcoming biannual international disability golf tournament, which will take place at the San Roque Golf Club.

A statement from the Cairns Cup follows below:

Representatives from the Cairns Cup were on the Rock of Gibraltar last week to continue preparations for the upcoming biannual international disability golf tournament, which will take place at the prestigious San Roque Golf Club. During their visit, the delegation met with local stakeholders, delivered a special presentation to local disability golfers, and donated training equipment to the Special Olympics Gibraltar team.

The Cairns Cup, organised by British Inclusive Golf, is a celebrated international competition between teams from Europe and the USA, made up of elite golfers with a range of disabilities. Often referred to as the “Ryder Cup of disability golf,” the event showcases not only sporting excellence but also promotes inclusion and unity in the golfing world.

Ian Halliwell, CEO and Tournament Director of the Cairns Cup, led the visit alongside colleague Steve Skitt, bringing with them the Cairns Cup trophy, which was proudly displayed during the presentations. The visit served to foster community engagement and further the organisation's longstanding support of Gibraltar’s disability golf scene.

“It’s always inspiring to connect with local golfers and communities who share our passion for inclusive sport,” said Ian Halliwell. “The enthusiasm in Gibraltar was incredible, and we’re excited about the support the region has shown for the Cairns Cup.”

The Cairns Cup team also donated new training equipment to Special Olympics Gibraltar, including a putting mat and a driving practice net, both suitable for indoor or outdoor use. This donation builds on previous support the organisation has provided to local athletes, offering golfers on the Rock more opportunities to train and improve their skills without needing to travel.

The equipment was accepted on behalf of Special Olympics Gibraltar by golfers Ivan Gomez Mannion, Julian De Las Heras, Jeffrey Migliori, and Charles Zammit.

Mr. Halliwell also confirmed that Gibraltar golfers would be invited to take part in events surrounding next year’s international tournament, further deepening the connection between the Cairns Cup and the Rock’s golfing community.

The San Roque edition of the Cairns Cup promises to be a landmark event in disability sport, continuing to build momentum as a global platform for ability, collaboration, and inclusion.
