Royal Gibraltar Regiment Marks 80th Anniversary of VE Day at Cross of Sacrifice

Today, the Royal Gibraltar Regiment (RG) led a commemorative parade marking the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day. The service was held at the Cross of Sacrifice on Devil’s Tower Road. The ceremony honoured the service and sacrifice of those who fought in the Second World War and celebrated the enduring peace that followed.

The event was coordinated by Headquarters British Forces Gibraltar and led by His Excellency the Governor of Gibraltar, Lieutenant General Sir Ben Bathurst.

The occasion brought together members of the armed forces, veterans, and civilian dignitaries in a shared moment of solemn reflection. A Tri-Service Honour Guard, accompanied by a bugler and piper from the Royal Gibraltar Regiment Corps of Drums, provided a ceremonial backdrop befitting the historical significance of the day.

The Governor of Gibraltar, His Excellency Lieutenant General Sir Ben Bathurst, Commander British Forces Gibraltar Commodore Tom Guy, RG’s Honorary Colonel General Sir Patrick Sanders and Deputy Chief Minister the Hon Dr Joseph Garcia were among the dignitaries in attendance, laying wreaths in tribute to the fallen.

Commanding Officer of the Royal Gibraltar Regiment, Lieutenant Colonel John Pitto said:

“Today, we pause to remember the extraordinary courage and resilience of those who served during the Second World War. The 80th anniversary of VE Day is not only a moment to look back with gratitude but also to reaffirm our commitment to peace, duty, and service.”

The event formed part of a wider programme of commemorations taking place across the UK and Overseas Territories, uniting communities in shared remembrance of a pivotal moment in modern history.
