Royal Gibraltar Regiment Celebrates 86th Anniversary

The Royal Gibraltar Regiment (RG) held a series of special events as part of its Regimental Week celebrations, marking its 86th anniversary.
A statement from British Forces Gibraltar follows below:
The week commenced on Tuesday, 6th May, with a Drumhead Service honouring and paying respects to former RG soldiers. This was followed by the First Fifty physical training session in Casemates Square, commemorating the first fifty volunteers who formed part of the original Gibraltar Defence Force.
That evening, a Cocktail Reception at the Alameda Gardens welcomed personnel, veterans, and distinguished guests, officially launching the week’s celebrations.
On Wednesday, 7th May, the spotlight turned to the Regiment’s youth, as the Royal Gibraltar Regiment Army Cadets were awarded their Motor Transport badges during a formal ceremony at Buffadero Training Centre. The badges were presented by the Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel John Pitto.
Thursday, 8th May, featured a series of team-building activities—including potted sports, rock climbing, and paintball—aimed at strengthening camaraderie across the ranks.
That evening, the RG hosted its 86th Anniversary Regimental Dinner for all Officers and Senior Non-Commissioned Officers at the magnificent St. Michael’s Cave. The event was attended by the Chief Minister of Gibraltar, Fabian Picardo, and the Regiment’s Honorary Colonel, General Sir Patrick Sanders, along with other invited guests.
Private Soldiers and Junior Non-Commissioned Officers held their own celebratory dinner at the Royal Gibraltar Regiment Association (RGRA) Club, rounding off a day of spirited competition and formal tradition.
These events served as a grand celebration of the Regiment’s current achievements and an affirmation of its continued commitment during the Regimental Formation.
The week concluded on Saturday, 10th May, with a lively Families Day at Devil’s Tower Camp. Serving members and their loved ones enjoyed a relaxed, festive atmosphere featuring bouncy castles, a barbecue, and family-friendly entertainment—highlighting the Regiment’s appreciation for the vital role families play in supporting those who serve.
Lieutenant Colonel John Pitto, Commanding Officer of the Royal Gibraltar Regiment, remarked:
“This year’s celebrations held special significance as we marked our 86th anniversary. We welcomed veterans, families, and the wider community to join us in commemorating our past achievements, celebrating our present successes, and looking ahead to a promising future.”
