The Government of Gibraltar and the Gibraltar Health Authority have confirmed that the recent industrial dispute involving General Operatives, Domestics and Labourers within the GHA has now been resolved following constructive engagement with Unite the Union.

His Majesty’s Government of Gibraltar and the Gibraltar Health Authority are pleased to confirm that the recent industrial dispute involving General Operatives, Domestics and Labourers within the GHA has now been resolved following constructive engagement with Unite the Union. 

The agreement has been formally accepted by the staff affected. 

This negotiated resolution recognises the important role played by these members of staff in active clinical environments. A comprehensive review carried out by the GHA and Unite concluded that the roles undertaken by General Operatives, Domestics and Labourers, particularly their responsibilities related within different clinical environments and adherence to infection control protocols, differed significantly from those of general cleaners employed in non-clinical Government departments. 

The assessment also identified inconsistencies in job descriptions for individuals performing the same functions, contributing to longstanding concerns. These discrepancies have now been addressed through a realignment and clarification of roles and responsibilities, bringing clarity and fairness to the grading structure. 

Further concerns raised by staff, including matters relating to equipment and uniforms, have also been looked into and are being addressed as part of the resolution process. 

The GHA and HMGoG are confident that this agreement appropriately recognises the dedication and professionalism of the staff involved, whose contributions are essential to the smooth running of the GHA.
