GSD: Government “Shoots the Messenger and Side-steps Breach of Election Promise”

The GSD has said that the Government’s response to the its observations on the “breaking" of its electoral promise on the College of Further Education is “reflective of their usual trend now to shoot the messenger.” The party argues that this has been seen in the context of the Principle Auditor and more recently with the Town Planner at the DPC.

A statement continued: “It is not surprising that Mr Cortes engages in the tactic of deflection by focussing his attack on Mr Bossino.

“Although there clearly are educational and traffic concerns which arise, and while the Government will not dictate who speaks on what from the GSD Opposition, the fact is that Mr Bossino has shadow ministerial responsibility for planning. The reality is that the drastic change of location from Gibraltar’s northern point to its most southern point in less than 2 years is testament to a completely disorganised and aimless approach to planning.

“How does the Government propose to deal with the significant logistical challenge that moving from Europa point to the Comprehensive schools will represent, as students have to go from one subject matter class to another between periods for example?

“The undeniable fact is that the GSLP have a blatant disregard for planning.

“They also have a blatant disregard for promises they make. They said that the College was “scheduled to open no later than September 2025” and the pictures in their manifesto showed the College “at the site of the Cross of Sacrifice” in respect of which they said that the plans had Outline Planning Permission.”

Damon Bossino said: “None of this has materialised. The plans have been scrapped. The College will now not be at the Cross of Sacrifice and will now not open this month. These promises have been broken - period. Mr Cortes should have the sense and humility to apologise for this failure and not engage in personal attacks.”
