Special Olympics Gibraltar (SOG) this week announced the recent donation of iPads from NatWest International, a crucial contribution that will empower athletes in its Athlete Leadership Programme (ALP) and bridge the digital divide for its aspiring athlete leaders.

Special Olympics athlete leaders are trained individuals who take on vital roles within the organisation as coaches, officials, public speakers, advocates for inclusion and a greater role for athletes in decision-making processes. Their leadership is instrumental in improving programming and championing a more inclusive society.

The presentation, which took place in Gibraltar, saw Amanda Cid De La Paz, Business Manager of NatWest International Gibraltar, present the new devices to the four athlete leaders: Francis Avellano, Ivan Gomez Mannion, Julian De las Heras, and Francis Mauro. This generous donation will provide essential technological support as the athletes progress through their specialised ALP training modules. Lee Guerreiro, another SOG athlete, has also successfully transitioned into an athlete coach, a role he has held for several years, exemplifying the programme's success.

To successfully complete their certified training, the athletes required reliable access to digital resources. The new iPads will enable them to engage with their coursework, develop their skills, and fully participate in the digital aspects of the programme.

The event was attended by Denis Lafferty, Chairman of SOG, and Annie Risso, CEO/National Director of SOG and Tutor for the ALPs. Also present was Francis Mauro Snr, who serves as the ALPs Secretary.

“Special Olympics Gibraltar is extremely grateful to NatWest International for this wonderful donation,” said Annie Risso. “This support is more than just a gift of technology; it is an investment in the potential of our athletes. It empowers them to become leaders, advocates, and active participants in shaping their own community and a more inclusive world. Thank you for helping to change our athletes' lives.”

The initiative was the result of a collaborative effort between SOG and NatWest International, with special recognition given to Tracey Abernethy of NatWest International in Jersey, who worked closely with Annie Risso to facilitate the donation. This contribution underscores NatWest International's commitment to supporting local communities and fostering opportunities for growth and inclusion.
