Gibraltar Citizens Advice Bureau - Debt Awareness Week

To mark Debt Awareness Week, the Gibraltar Citizens Advice Bureau have published tips for managing debt.
A statement from the Gibraltar Citizens Advice Bureau follows below:
Debt Awareness Week is an opportunity to reflect on how we manage our money and to take practical steps to avoid financial stress. While it’s natural to want to support family, enjoy social occasions, or keep up with everyday expenses, it’s important that spending decisions do not lead to long-term financial difficulties.
The Gibraltar Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) regularly receives enquiries from people struggling with debt. Often, financial problems develop gradually when spending goes beyond what a person can comfortably afford, making it difficult to keep up with repayments and everyday bills. That’s why we encourage everyone to take a moment to review their finances and make informed decisions about spending, borrowing, and saving. With a little planning and awareness, it’s possible to stay in control of your finances and avoid unnecessary debt.
Simple Tips for Managing Debt:
1. Plan Your Finances
Assess your income and essential monthly expenses. Knowing exactly what you earn and what you must pay each month will help you understand what you can realistically afford.
2. Set a Spending Limit
Create a budget and stick to it. Setting clear limits on discretionary spending can help prevent financial strain later.
3. Spend Wisely
Look for good value and avoid impulse purchases. Taking time to consider whether something is a necessity or simply a want can make a big difference over time.
4. Be Cautious with Credit
Credit can be useful, but it should be used carefully. Always check the terms and conditions and make sure you can comfortably meet the repayment schedule.
5. Borrow Responsibly
If you need to borrow money, speak to your bank first about suitable options. Avoid relying on multiple forms of credit if you are unsure whether you will be able to repay them.

Take control of your finances: spend wisely, borrow carefully, and seek advice early if you need it.
