Apr 17 Thatcher Funeral Update
In a slight haze of drizzle, small crowds began to line The Strand this morning in anticipation of Baroness Thatcher's funeral procession. The event, which ran from Westminster Palace to St. Paul's Cathedral, required a massive 6000 extra police officers on duty. Speaking to one Police Constable, she noted that many were patrolling the event voluntarily, with officers from across the Metropolitan Police service involved.
The parade began at 9am, with a number of military personal from across a spectrum of different services marching in front of the hearse. Once the procession reached St. Clementine's church, the coffin, emblazoned with the Union Jack, giving the funeral march an almost military feel, was transported onto a horse drawn carriage. The parade, lined by RAF Regiment officers, then continued towards St. Paul's Cathedral where Funeral guests gathered. As spectators witnessed the spectacle they clapped in respect and celebration of Baroness Thatcher's achievements during her time as Prime Minister. Speaking to YGTV, Londoner Julia Simkiss noted that she had travelled from Hampstead to watch the procession. Julia carried a red rose with her, which she planned to lay at St. Paul's Cathedral. 'She was [a] fantastic [Prime Minster] until towards the end,' Julia explained, 'she was in Office for too long.'
Flags on all buildings flew at half mast and Big Ben was silenced for the duration of the Funeral Ceremony, which ended at 12pm.
