May 07 - RGP Hosts Crime Scene Investigator’s Workshop for Youngsters
The Royal Gibraltar Police launched a new initiative for 10-11 year old students on Saturday the 4th of May. The CSI Workshop provided pupils with an exiting, hands-on program that exposed them to real crime scene techniques at a level appropriate for their age. They experienced fingerprinting, the lifting of shoeprints, examining hairs and fibres and the obtaining of DNA as evidence. The main objectives of the workshop were to introduce pupils to forensic science, show them how the police applies science in crime investigations and teach pupils practical work using scientific methods.
The programme was devised in consultation with the Department of Education through their Education Advisor and sought to incorporate learning from their own science curriculum, applying the learning to the science of forensics.
Forty children from a number of schools attended the workshop. The workshop was a great success with participants enjoying all subjects taught but the highlight of the workshop was when they were given a crime scenario which they had to investigate using their newly learnt forensic skills. They donned protective equipment which was kindly supplied by Oxy Ltd. All the participants had a great day and are pressing for a future similar event.
The day was organised by officers of the Neighbourhood Policing Unit, Crime Scene Investigation Department and the Department of Education’s Education Advisor.
