June 03 - Beach Accessibility Project
This year Her Majesty’s Government of Gibraltar has embarked on entirely new works to ensure accessibility at all the beaches, where possible. Access Points, ramps and facilities where necessary and possible, have been redesigned in consultation with the Gibraltar Health Authority’s Occupational Therapy section and in direct liaison with the Technical Services Department.
These changes comply with ‘Part M’ of the Building Regulations, reflecting access guidelines, thus providing a more inclusive and accessible environment.
The Gibraltar Tourist Board, as principal service provider for Gibraltar’s beaches, is delighted to have partnered with the Gibraltar Care Agency, to take full responsibility to ensure full access to Gibraltar’s beaches and existing beach facilities this summer. Further to this, Gibraltar Tourist Board personnel will operate a loan service of specialised equipment, to be used both on land and sea and geared for beach users with mobility limitations, at Eastern Beach, Catalan Bay, Camp Bay and Western Beach.
Commenting on the new facilities the Hon Neil Costa MP, Minister for Tourism, Commercial Affairs, Public Transport and the Port said “I am delighted at the improvements this project brings. Not only does it represent Government’s commitment to developing the tourist product but it also reflects the importance this Government attaches to improving the quality of life for all Gibraltarians.”
‘This government has an inclusive agenda,’ said the Hon Samantha Sacramento, Minister for Equality and Social Services. ‘Our beaches should be accessible to the whole community and the improvements we are announcing today will do much to achieve this aim.’
