Jul 08 - DPC Discusses Small Boat Marina Alterations

The Development and Planning Commission met this morning to discuss the Government project for an extensive small boat marina to be built in the harbour next to Coaling Island. Chris Riddell, the project manager, announced that the plans for the wharf at the northern end of the marina had been altered to allow for a wider channel to access the marina. He also explained that a small island would separate the access channel from a special exclusion zone where only sailing and rowing boats would be allowed to navigate. Mr Riddell said that there would be a 20 meter bathing zone by the shore in the area of the Mediterranean and Calpe Rowing Clubs.

The changes came about, he explained, after he had listened to the concerns presented in representations made by the respective clubs who use the waterfront for various activities. Mr Riddell added that, under the revised plans, there would now be a wake-free area which could safely be used for training by the clubs.

Speaking about other representations made to him, Mr Riddell said that no artifacts of archaeological significance had been discovered in the initial survey and that two resident species, the limpet and a type of large mussel, would be relocated before works began.

The Environmental Safety Group’s Janet Howitt said that she had concerns about the detrimental effect that so many boat engines and the increased traffic would have on the air quality in the area but she was assured by Environment Minister Dr John Cortes that his department would look into setting up an air quality monitoring station in the area.

The other major change announced was that there would no longer be a refueling station in the area. Mr Riddell stressed that the project was intended  primarily for recreational use for the whole community to enjoy as opposed to an industrial development.

There were various questions tabled concerning parking facilities for the new marina and the space available in the harbour for cruise liners to be able to maneuver safely.
