Dec 12 - World Disability Day Commemorated at St. Joseph’s School
On Tuesday 3rd December St Joseph’s First School took part in World Disability day. This event is celebrated throughout the world and helps to promote public awareness through education and hopes to break barriers and build a more inclusive society. The aim of the day was to promote an understanding of what it means to have a disability and to help the children develop an awareness of needs, and respect of the differences between people in their local community.
Each year group focused on a different disability through practical learning activities: Reception children looked at the needs of people with hearing impairments, Year 1 children learnt basic sign language and focused on the needs of people who cannot speak, Year 2 children used a variety of aids to support their learning of people with visual impairments and the Year 3 children (see photos below) looked at different wheelchairs/mobility devices to develop their understanding of the difficulties that people without mobility face in Gibraltar on a daily basis.
