Mar 17 - The World Goes Green for St. Patrick's Day
Happy St. Patrick’s Day to all! Celebrating the patron Saint of Ireland, St. Patrick, who was credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland, the festival is celebrated world wide, and often marked by donning Ireland’s national green colour and playing Irish music. Many take the opportunity to indulge in Irish drinks such as Guinness and Irish Whisky.
St. Patrick’s day is traditionally marked with the offering of prayers for missionaries worldwide. The World’s approach to the holiday is a colourful one, with US cities New York, Boston and Chicago hosting annual parades to honour their longstanding link with Ireland through many of their citizens’ descendants. Chicago goes as far as to dye their river an emerald green.
This year’s festivities saw a collection of iconic landmarks around the globe illuminated in attractive green colouring, including London’s Abbey Road, Glasgow's Hydro arena and Armadillo venue, the London Eye, the Pyramids of Egypt and the Great Wall of China.
Ireland shares a rich and fruitful history with the rest of the World, with more than 100 million people boasting Irish descendancy.
Gibraltar honoured this year’s St. Patrick’s Day weekend with a series of events hosted by local pubs. The Loreto Convent celebrated St. Paddy’s with their annual Netball tournament. The Minister for Sports Steven Linares is also set to meet with the local Gaelic football team to honour the event.
