Jun 17 - Government Sets Up Task Force to Tackle Climate Change

climate change The Government is adamant that it is aiming to achieve a carbon neutral footprint for Gibraltar. Charged with achieving this aim is the Climate Change Task Force which meets monthly at No 6 Convent Place

Although meetings of the Task Force are chaired by Deputy Chief Minister, Dr Joseph Garcia, the Task Force includes Environment Minister Dr John Cortes who is driving the project together with his department. The Task Force also contains a mix of people from both the private and the public sector. It includes representatives from the Gibraltar Electricity Authority, AquaGib, the Finance Centre, Gibtelecom and the Port Authority as well as the Chief Technical Officer and the Financial Secretary. These are balanced by members of the Boards from the Chamber of Commerce and the Federation of Small Businesses. The group further benefits from having an independent environmental consultant, Geoff Lye as a member.

The Task Force has a number of different ongoing work streams, including cleaner power generation, the introduction of renewable energy, uptake of energy efficiency and the decarbonisation of the economy to name but a few. They aim to present their findings to the Cabinet later this year with a view to publishing a Climate Change Strategy in the autumn.
