Jul 18 - Record Number of Fire Brigade Undergraduates
This year has seen a record number of seven undergraduate students taking up placements with the City Fire Brigade. (With the Operations and Fire Safety Departments) under the Student Summer Placement Scheme, from 1 July to the 30 August.
The students are undertaking courses at three different Universities; Aaron Aguilera, Stefan Gonzalez, Justin Grima, Ivan Riddell and Liam Wilding are all currently studying at the University of Wolverhampton, and undertaking a BSc Hons Fire and Rescue Degree Programme. Liam Barton is undertaking a Fire Safety Engineering degree at the University of South Wales and Julian Wahnon is undertaking a degree in Fire and Leadership studies with the University of Central Lancashire.
The students have been assigned to work with the different Watches and therefore follow the shift pattern of their Watch, working during day shifts and part of the night shifts. In this way they will get a real taster of what life is like being a Firefighter.
During their placement all the students will be covering a significant number of training modules including;
Breathing Apparatus (Theory and Practical) Ladders (Theory and Practical) Road Traffic Collision (RTC) equipment familiarisation and maintenance Ship Firefighting (Theory and Practical) Pumps and Primers (Theory and Practical) Water Relays practical Hose Management General Station Routine maintenance tasks Risk Visits to specific sites in Gibraltar.
