Jun 23 – “Landmark Day” For Health Service
The first phase of the new electronic patient record system being developed by GMIS/Ascribe and the GHA is due to go live tomorrow.
On the 10th, the new GHA registration system for patients was successfully implemented with the successful transfer of 65,000 patient records into the new system. There has been extensive integration and user acceptance testing before the go live of this system and this has involved the supplier, EMIS health and a signification numbers of GHA teams including the EPR Programme teams, IMT teams and the Registration department.
This collaborative partnership has been overseen by the EPR Board, chaired by the Minister for Health. This very important first stage has laid the foundation for implementation of the First Phase of a fully integrated electronic patient record. The first phase will be the introduction of an electronic clinical record in Primary Care and the Accident and Emergency Department.
In preparation for tomorrow’s launch, there has been considerable testing of the new clinical systems by end users; general practitioners, hospital medical staff, nursing and allied healthcare professionals and extensive training of staff. Access to records will be instant at the point of delivery, with all clinicians being able to make use of them regardless of location. The implementation of these new systems will bring significant benefits to patients providing a better and safer service.
This is only the start of the journey and the GHA will be continuing to develop these systems further over the coming months and will embark on the Phase 2 of this pioneering programme in the autumn of this year. This will include the hospital systems including maternity, theatres and intensive care.
Minister for Health, Dr John Cortes, stated, "This is a red letter day for our health service. It is the start of a transformation into a much better, user friendly and safe service to benefit clinicians, administrators, and particularly patients. I have nothing but praise for the members of the team who have been working hard to achieve this and who will continue to work unit we deliver the full system in the months ahead."
