Aug 17 - SDGG Says They Are Committed To Reducing The Environmental Impact Of National Day Balloons

The SDGG takes careful note of the concerns raised by the ESG and GONHS about the balloons that are released as part of the National Day festivities, and the impact it has on the environment.

The SDGG has already taken significant steps to reduce the environmental impact of this facet of the celebrations by reducing the number of balloons being released and using the most environmentally friendly type of balloon presently available to us.

The SDGG is committed to continuing to further mitigate the environmental impact of its actions but it is also very keen to provide the Gibraltarian public with what it wants on the day and, to date, the feedback we receive is overwhelmingly in favour of the balloons being released.

The SDGG Chairman, however, commits himself to carrying out a public consultation exercise to gauge public opinion on the issue so as to act in accordance with the wishes of the majority. Unfortunately, it may not be possible to implement the outcome for this National Day but, regardless of what the consultation yields, the SDGG would wish to engage GONHS (and any other interested party) to try and find a solution which satisfies all sectors of our community.
