Oct 26 - Frank Carreras Elected President Of AASSE

Frank Carreras, the President of the Gibraltar Amateur Athletics Association (Gib 3As), has been elected President of the Athletics Associations of the Small States of Europe (AASSE) following their annual general meeting held last weekend in Lausanne, Switzerland.

AASSE is a highly influential group within European Athletics since, collectively, its members represent 20% of those with full voting rights at European Athletics congresses. The idea for this group was first mooted in 1989 and the central aim remains to represent the athletics interests of the smaller European nations. AASSE was officially recognised by athletics European governing body, the EA, at its 1994 congress in Vienna.

The current membership comprises Andorra, Cyprus, Gibraltar, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Montenegro and San Marino.

Frank Carreras first joined the AASSE committee two years ago, in the capacity of Secretary. His promotion to President of the group follows a unanimous vote by all the members attending last weekend’s meeting. The Gibraltar Amateur Athletics Association says that this is a very significant event for Gibraltar athletics, because it places us in a position to be able to ensure that its interests are understood and considered not only by AASSE, but also at a wider full European level by the EA.

Minister for Sports, Steven Linares, said: “The AASSE is a highly influential group within European Athletics and is composed of countries such as Cyprus, Iceland and Montenegro to name a few. To have a Gibraltarian voted in as President is a measure of the regard with which the GAAA’s is held within the European Athletics family. This is great news for sport in Gibraltar in general and once again highlights the importance of being active members of international governing bodies.”
