Jul 28 - “Mission Accomplished” For Team Gibraltar At The Youth Commonwealth Games

Time was called on the latest edition of the Youth Commonwealth Games last Sunday with a sense of “mission accomplished” for Team Gibraltar.

The Games in the Bahamas saw over thousand young athletes from across the Commonwealth participate in athletics, road cycling, judo, swimming, beach volleyball and soccer, rugby 7s, boxing and tennis.

Team Gibraltar competed in swimming and athletics with five swimmers and an athlete representing the Rock in the Caribbean.

Although no medals were won or finals made, the squad performed admirably producing a string of personal bests with perhaps the stand out performance coming from swimmer Matt Savitz who broke two national records in the pool.

Swim coach Melissa Holland led the swim team at her first major games and was understandably proud on her young charges: “Proud….there’s not much more I can say, they left everything at the pool each day which is all I can ask of them, my dad (Joe Santos) has echoed that”.

The team was led by Linda Alvarez who, although no stranger to big sporting events as president of the Gibraltar Island Games Association, enjoyed her first time on the Commonwealth stage. The President of the Gibraltar association Harry Murphy and the general secretary Joe Schembri were also across the pond attending a CGF seminar and were always on hand for guidance and support.

The next step for Team Gibraltar is preparing for the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia.
