Apr 03 - Full Stadium Development Footprint Revealed
The GFA has today published an advertorial in local newspapers providing further information on the Europa Point Stadium proposal.
Apart from answering public concerns about the feasibility and possible negative effects of the development, the advertorial also mentions a “New Site” located to the north of the proposed stadium. The area in question can be seen in the two maps provided and is currently occupied by several residential properties. According to the advertorial, ideas for this area of the development “are still being formulated.”
The advertorial rejects the possibility of building the stadium in the existing Victoria Stadium site. It also rejects the suggestion that the new stadium will be exclusively for football: “In addition to representing Gibraltar around the world, it is also important that the national stadium becomes
a resource for the people – one that can be used every day of the year for a variety of activities. It is envisioned that Europa Point will become the centrepiece for a range of leisure, sporting and cultural events. Although primarily a football venue, the people of Gibraltar will also be able to enjoy world-class concerts, business conferences, private functions and much more. It will be a community facility, offering an attractive environment with appropriate tourist appeal.”
The proposal is set to be presented to the Development and Planning Commission next week. This is an initial consultation which will not, at these early stages, deliver a final decision on the future of the project.
