Jun 04 - RG Soldiers Are Army Inter Corps Hockey Champions

Four members of the Royal Gibraltar Regiment recently returned victorious from the Army Inter Corps Hockey Tournament. The Infantry Team took first place in both the Seniors and Masters categories.

Major Charles Bonfante, Warrant Officer Class 2 (WO2) Donald Drimmie, Private (Pte) Kyle Davis and Private Kaydreon Drimmie all helped to secure the first win for the Infantry team in 12 years. Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Ivor Lopez was delighted with the result, he said:

“Hockey is a sport where Gibraltar has always performed exceptionally well and I am pleased to see that this also applies to the Regiment.  Despite us being a relatively small unit, four of our soldiers have been chosen to represent the Infantry Team and gone on to win the competition. I’m extremely proud of their achievement, this is a great result for the Regiment. Competing at such a high level is not only good for morale but it also helps to keep our soldiers physically fit and active.”

Two Royal Gibraltar Regiment players in particular helped to secure the winning trophy. Pte Davis scored the winning goal in the final for the Seniors category and WO2 Drimmie saved the penalty on the Masters Final which ultimately won the Infantry Team the Tournament Trophy.

Goalkeeper WO2 Drimmie explains how it felt to be part of the winning squads:

“We had planned to work hard and try to win the Tournament next year, but the training we did in Gibraltar prior to the Tournament must have paid off. Being part of the squad who won the Army Inter Corps Hockey Tournament has to be the best time in my Army Hockey Career. It simply felt amazing to win bothcompetitions,” he said

The squad are now looking forward to the Inter Service Indoor Tournament which will be held at HMS Collingwood in October.
