Queensway Quay has seen many restaurants come and go over the years – many are expensive, many are flashy but few last. One exception is The Landing’s – a luxury oasis of tranquility overlooking the marina.
The very professional staff will make you feel welcome the moment you arrive perhaps serving you with a pre-dinner cocktail carefully prepared in their bar. One look at the menu confirms that this is truly a unique establishment in Gibraltar. The dishes present original classics with a twist: their burger is no ordinary burger – it’s made with exclusive Kobe beef and is garnished with wasabi mayonnaise. Other standout dishes are the Supreme of Duck Breast and the West Indian Spicy Chicken Curry. But, to be perfectly honest, once you’ve tried what can be considered their signature dish – the Line Catch No 3 – you’ll be unlikely to choose anything else when you return. The Line Catch is the catch of the day (most times I’ve been it’s been a delicate Sea Bass) pan fried with Leek Grain Mustard Mash, Lemon and Fine Herb Beurre Blanc. The balance of these ingredients is perfectly achieved and one gets the sense that their chef really takes time over how to bring together different, sometimes exotic, flavours in one dish.
As an individual who is seriously weary of immersing themselves into a culture head first, legitimate Italian restaurants worry me. Now any establishment that counts dough balls with a fine selection of garlic based condiments as a starter, is placed prominently on my list of ‘a-ok places to eat’, and let me tell you, the list is short.
Now Pizza Express does profess to be an Italian cuisine based eatery, but does so without hurling ostentatious and un-pronounceable dishes at its customers. The restaurant presents the delightful fullness that can be obtained by eating a Pizza Hut takeaway, but with a hint more culture and freshness.
Gaucho’s – an Argentinian grill restaurant by Market Place – has been serving quality food to diners for a good number of years now. When visiting, you can choose to dine either in the cosy, cavern-like interior or, during the summer months, in the outside BBQ area that often has live music.
Although it is primarily a meat restaurant specializing in fat, juicy steaks, Gacuho’s also caters for those who might not be too keen on an exclusively carnivorous outing – their selection of fresh fish, prawns and inventive salads is impressive too.
Another high point is the extensive wine list which includes many Argentinian reds, the perfect accompaniment to wash down that mixed grill.
When you’re working and you are in a hurry, it’s all too easy to settle for a quick sandwich or a roll at your desk, but every now and again, it’s nice to have a good meal. Now most people have an hour for lunch... if you are a lawyer you may even have an hour and a half. Here at YGTV, we’re lucky to get away from the office for half an hour.
But there is good news, Cheers, which has now become a firm favourite of ours, turns around our meals in about 30 minutes, with a new and fresh selection of special dishes just right for the day. Healthy options, fishy and meaty options always adorn the menu and from sitting down and ordering, to paying the bill and leaving, we’ve timed less than forty minutes a few times.
The atmosphere is great, sat out on the terrace, set within the courtyard of the Cornwall’s Centre, giving you a great summery vibe. The inside of the restaurant, although not as big, offers you air conditioning, which should be much appreciated this time of year.
The specials menu to look out for, and definitely our favourite, is the Cheers lamb. A succulent shoulder of lamb, slow roasted; with an onion based gravy is to die for. Served with “patatas a lo pobre” this makes for one hell of a lunch.
