YGTV Presents Video - His Worship Mayor of Gibraltar - Julio Alcantara

Julio AlcantaraMayor of Gibraltar Julio Alcantara’s Tenure Comes to an End

After a year of service to Gibraltar, Mayor, Julio Alcantara’s tenure has come to close. Speaking to His Worship this morning about his most memorable moments of the year, he replied, with a hint of sparkle in his eyes that, with it being the Diamond Jubilee year, he has had many memorable instances. One of the main moments was walking through Main Street with The Earl and Countess of Wessex, on their recent visit to Gibraltar.

His Worship also noted that watching the Gibraltar Regiment taking over the Guard from Scots Guard in London was history in the making that he got to witness. The Mayor explained that he set out, at the beginning of his tenure, to thank you to a whole variety of people that give their lives for free, in aide of the community. What surprised His Worship was the number of people who volunteer for the community. ‘They are the soul of this community,’ he added.

‘Some of the little people have never been invited to the City Hall and they are what makes up Gibraltar, not the elite, who are constantly invited…’

When asked what was next for him, the Mayor grinned, ‘[my wife and] I celebrated our 41st wedding anniversary yesterday, and I’m leaving the rest up to my wife. I’m retiring but I’ve got energy. If the Government of Gibraltar requires my involvement in anything, I’ll be there.’
