The Government says it notes, “with disappointment”, the European Parliament’s objection, today, to the entry into force of the European Commission’s decision to remove certain jurisdictions, including Gibraltar, from the EU’s list of ‘high-risk’ third-countries with strategic deficiencies as regards anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing (“AML/CFT”).

Yesterday afternoon, following reports of a fishing net drifting between 50 and 100m off Europa Point, the Port Launch, General Elliot II, was deployed to investigate. On arrival, it was seen that the net, believed to belong to a Spanish fishing boat, extended several hundred metres and posed a serious risk to navigation for passing vessels.In an operation that took over two hours, the Duty Port Officer, Matthew Ferrary, assisted by Coxswain Leslie Ward at the scene, coordinated the recovery and safe removal of the nets, supported by an RGP launch and the Molinary tug, Ana.
The Government of Gibraltar and the Liquidator of the OEM group of companies have been in dispute for some time now as to whether or not the Government is liable to pay the Liquidator compensation in respect of certain property developments taken over by the former Government from OEM companies in 2007.
