The Government says it notes, “with disappointment”, the European Parliament’s objection, today, to the entry into force of the European Commission’s decision to remove certain jurisdictions, including Gibraltar, from the EU’s list of ‘high-risk’ third-countries with strategic deficiencies as regards anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing (“AML/CFT”).
A local man has been cleared of being involved in a tobacco smuggling operation. Albert Mercieca was charged with possession and storage of a commercial quantity of cigarettes after Customs officers raided a property he was visiting in April last year.
As part of a visit organized by the Royal Netherlands Navy, the family of the late Louis Coenraad were granted closure to Mr. Coenraad’s death after the crash of a Gunman Avenger 028 during an exercise that involved several ships and two planes 60 nautical miles off the bay of Gibraltar in 1960.
In response to yesterday’s criticism by the GSD of the Government’s position on illegal net fishing in the bay, a Government spokesperson has accused the party of attempting to ‘hide their desire for the illegal fishing to continue under the type of agreement they did in the late nineties’.
The public consultation period of the recently launched draft Sustainable Traffic, Transport and Parking Plan has been extended. The public is invited to make contributions and suggestions to the plan until 31st March 2015.
