Madeleine McCann five years on.
Five years down the line and still there is no clarity as to what transpired on that night in Praia da Luz Portugal. As far as anniversaries go, the disappearance of the almost four-year-old girl will continue to send shock waves through every parents mind, until the truth of what really happened comes to light and she can be finally laid to rest.
When I say what really happened, I do so because of all the inaccuracies and purported failings of the parents to give an accurate account of the events leading up to during and after she was reported missing.
The Policia Judiciaria was dealt a cruel hand when it was touted in the British media that it was largely made up of bumbling fools; the co-operation of British police on the case went further to cloud the investigation.
Whatever happened that night, the case of Madeleine McCann is still one that raises more questions than answers. After a frantic initial search for Madeleine, the Portuguese police were going on the facts as presented by the parents Kate and Gerry McCann, both doctors.
The Portuguese Police did what all police forces do with the information they had available at the time, the resort was searched, people were interviewed and all seemed well, until evidence for a second theory started to appear. This theory would put Madeleine’s parents at the forefront of the investigation with the police announcing them as suspects, together with Robert Murat.
Inaccuracies in the statements provided by the Tapas Seven and the McCanns themselves and evidence of blood found by sniffer dogs on the floor, near the sofa in the apartment and then again in the boot of the McCann’s car, started to point with an accusing finger that Madeleine may have died in the apartment and that the parents had concocted the story of an abduction to throw the scent off them, and onto a paedophile boogeyman who like Madeleine is still to be found.
Whatever happened that night, there is still a hope that Madeleine may still be alive and if she is, what horrors may she have gone through? It is enough to serve as a wake up call to all parents, a child is a precious yet vulnerable thing, they require the protection that was afforded to you by your parents.
