The Naked Smuggler

Much has been done according to the Gibraltar news and Government press releases on the issues of Tabaco smuggling, but living in the North district, I am faced daily with hordes of people buying large quantities of cigarettes and then stripping down and strapping the boxes about their person in front of Notre Dame School.

When you mix adults in various states of undress, in front of a first school where the children’s ages range from four to eight years old, I kind of get a shiver down my spine.

The above practice by the smugglers is a daily occurrence, which I have personally witnessed. Last week I went to throw a rubbish bag in the refuse collection point and from behind one of the wheelie bins out popped in more ways than one a Spaniard who was pulling his pants up. Naturally I asked him nicely to go away.  But in most instances I see them from my window and by the time you call the police the smugglers have moved on.

I agree that there has been more police presence in the area as of late but not for long enough to deter the smugglers from coming back. There are many parents that want an end to this practice, so they can feel safe about their children.

I urge any person who feels threatened by large numbers of smugglers either loitering or in various state of undress to call the police in the first instance.
