Apr 01 – Mark Randall Sets Off On 8,000km Charity Walk

In high spirits and with a spring in his step, the former Commanding Officer of the Royal Gibraltar Regiment, Lieutenant Colonel (Rtd) Mark Randall, set off on his 8,000km trek from Gibraltar to Jerusalem this morning.

Wearing his characteristic sandals, Mark started his journey which is forecast to last anything between nine months and a year, from Europa Point.

He was accompanied by a large party including HE the Governor, Lt Gen. Edward Davis, the Commander of British Forces, Commodore Ian McGhie, Ministers Cortes and Sacramento, and Gibraltar Regiment, Ambulance and Fire Service personnel. A group of around 30 walkers will accompany him to Los Barrios, Spain.

Mark will walk from the Rock to Santiago de Compostela, across the Pyrenees into France, Italy and Rome, along the Dalmatian coast, Albania, Greece, Turkey, Cyprus and Israel – ending in Jerusalem.

Last year, Mark walked from Cardiff to Gibraltar and raised £17,000 for charity from the walk and subsequent sales of the book ‘Walk to the Rock’ a copy of which was presented to the Governor this morning.

The walk will be unsupported. Individuals, groups or organizations interested in joining Mark at any stage are more than welcome.

Mark’s walk is supporting the following charities;

•       The Royal Gibraltar Regiment Benevolent Fund – support to serving and retired soldiers and their families.

•       The GBC Open Day.

•       Tarourarte Education Charitable Organization – a new locally-registered charity hoping to advance the academic and vocational education of children in the village of Taourarte in the Province of Chefchouen in Morocco.

•       Por una sonrisa – a charity which aims to improve the quality of life for children and teenagers suffering from cancer.
