May 12 – Take Part In Childline’s Mental Health Week

Childline Gibraltar will be hosting an information stall at the College of Further Education on Tuesday morning and at Bayside on Wednesday morning for Mental Health Week with the theme: “Relationships”.  The Education Team have prepared leaflets aimed at educating the public on mental health issues particularly in children and young adults which focus on promoting better mental health. Childline says it encourages young people to have a chat and find out how they can help promote better mental health in and around the community.

Founded in 2001, Mental Health Week is a UK event supported by the Mental Health Foundation, a UK charity which supports research into mental health issues, promotes better mental health, campaigns to reduce the stigma and discrimination surrounding mental health, and develops better mental health services.

Since the first Mental Health Awareness Week in 2000 they have helped generate public debates around how anxiety, sleep deprivation and exercise can impact our mental health.  This year, the focus is on relationships.

This Mental Health Awareness Week, Childline is celebrating the connections, the relationships, the people in our lives who add to our well-being and protect and sustain our mental health.  From family and friends, to colleagues and neighbours, to the different agencies and organizations – in other words, taking notice of those connections that make you feel safe and supported.

Raising Awareness

Childline says that, more than a healthy diet and exercise, it is strong social networks improve our mental wellbeing.  The week will be about recognising this, and thanking the people that support you, reaching out to those who you can listen to and help, and campaigning to ensure that decision makers start addressing the barriers that stop people forming such important relationships.

Childline Gibraltar supports the Mental Health Foundation’s campaign for healthy and supportive relationships which helps reduce the risk of mental ill-health particularly among children and young adults.

If you are concerned about your child’s mental health and would like information or further resources, please call their free confidential Helpline at 8008 any evening between 5pm and 9pm to speak to one of their trained volunteers.  You can also contact Childline online via their website www.childline.gi or email This email address is being protected from spambots.
