This coming weekend, a group of approximately 15 cyclists, including two Guardian Angel charity committee members, will be undertaking a sponsored cycle ride from the Portugal border to Gibraltar in order to raise funds and awareness. The ride is extremely challenging aand will be done over three days (Friday 14th to Sunday 16th October), as follows: -

Day 1: Ayamonte – Aznalcazar – Approx.135 km

Day 2: Aznalcazar – Paterna de Rivera – Approx. 135 Km

Day 3: Paterna de Rivera – Gibraltar – Approx. 90 Km

The Guardian Angel Foundation, a Gibraltar registered charity (No. 237), was set up in 2013 with the intention of improving the standards of care and living for local children affected by genuine financial distress or suffering from any illness or disability which impairs their physical or mental well-being.  Furthermore, the Charity aims to provide financial or other support to any institutions which provide care, support or services to children in need.  The charity also seeks to fund activities which may benefit children and make their lives happier with less worry, which really is what childhood should be all about.

Unlike others, the Guardian Angel Foundation does not accumulate long-term funds in its bank account waiting for a project or cause. It will specifically find projects to fund and complete, and therefore always have a focus and reason to improve the life of children in need. To this end it has established a close working relationship with the Government to help guide it in its projects so that our help has a maximum impact on the children who most need it. In effect, every penny raised is used solely for the projects that have been identified.  Therefore, all administrative and other costs associated with running the charity will be met by the Committee members themselves.

A spokesperson said: “We can hopefully aim to get to Gibraltar for around 1.30 – 2pm on Sunday. Our finish line will be at Ocean Village where supporters will be waiting to greet us. Anyone wishing to join us at the finish and assist with fundraising are most welcome.

“We have already worked on and delivered some substantial projects for the community over the past few years, the most recent being a refurbishment of the Rainbow Ward Playroom and including a new Sensory Room at St Bernard’s Hospital. We have also identified several projects which the Charity is extremely eager to materialise. For example, the Charity is currently liaising with Cancer Relief Centre to construct a children’s playground at its premises so that children can play in an enjoyable environment whilst their parent/guardian is receiving treatment. The cost of this project is circa £10,000.

“Our largest partner, the Ocean Village & Atlantic Suites Health Clubs, will assist (via third party sponsorship) with the overnight stays along the 360km route. This means that 100% of the funds collected will be channelled directly to the Charity.
