Nov 28 - Gibraltar Gears Up For Christmas Jumper Day

Christmas Jumper Day will be held on Friday 16th December to help raise funds for Save the Children.

The Gibraltar branch of the UK charity is encouraging schools and businesses to sport a Christmas jumper or any item of festive clothing to help raise money for children in need.

With a motto of “Make the World Better with a Sweater”, Paul Lyon, Save the Children’s Gibraltar branch Chairman is hoping this year will exceed last year’s £6,000 raised for the charity.

Mr Lyon has already been in touch with schools and businesses to get involved, and his team are working towards the big day.
He said: “Last year more than four and a half thousand pounds were raised by the schools themselves, which is awesome.

“This is our biggest fundraiser of the year, and we don’t want people to go out and buy a Christmas jumper just for the occasion, even any Christmas accessories will do, it’s just about joining in the spirit.”

Mr Lyon often visits local schools to speak about Save the Children charity and the work they do in the world, helping raise awareness with Gibraltar’s youngsters.

“The key for me is we do something, we raise something, and whatever we get will help change a child’s life over the next few years. We’ve all seen the images of children in Aleppo and Iraq, and even in our Straits, there are some very harrowing images and it’s sad and all we’re trying to do is make their lives better,” he added.

Money raised can help bring essentials like healthcare, education, protection and food to the millions of children around the world who are missing out on the most basic support, and Save the Children’s website says every year, millions of children around the world die before their fifth birthday from easily preventable diseases like malaria, diarrhoea and pneumonia.
