May 12 – Successful RGP And GDP Recruits Fun Day

A successful Fun Day took place in Casemates Square recently. This was organised by the Recruit intake of 2017 from the Royal Gibraltar Police and Gibraltar Defence Police.

The event, which took place on Saturday 6 May, was planned in its entirety by the recruits from both forces as part of their formation training. Throughout this project, recruits demonstrate their resilience, problem solving techniques and team working, qualities that are essential when identifying potential managers and leaders. All the recruits – 28 in total - worked in groups and had to overcome many issues such as transportation, planning permission to stage this at Casemates on a Saturday (not an easy feat) and logistical problems, to name but a few.

The event was attended by many, including tourists from cruise liners visiting Gibraltar.   Attractions at the event included pedal go-karts, inflatable jumping castles, problem solving for any budding ‘Sherlock Holmes’ enthusiasts and two dog section displays - one in the morning session and the other in the afternoon. Also on display were two police motorcycles, a jet ski and a police vehicle for the young ones to sit on. On the day, a police van was “pulled” along Main Street by several of the recruits, accepting donations along the way.

There was also a raffle with the lucky winner walking - or rather riding - away with a brand new motorcycle, a Honda SH 125cc – thanks to Bassadone Motors for supporting the cause. All in all, the event was a huge success with around £9,000 collected during the whole project. All proceeds from the event go to The Calpe House Fund.

An MoD statement said: “A special thanks to everyone who helped make the Fun Day a great success, not forgetting our guardians on four legs, who carried out a cute but effective demonstration of their capabilities and were a great treat to watch, especially for the young ones.”

Chief Police Officer of the Gibraltar Defence Police, Chief Superintendent Rob Allen said: “It was great to see recruits from both forces, working effectively together with serving officers. If this is the future for policing in Gibraltar, we are in safe hands.”

The recruits have now virtually concluded their initial training. A Passing Out parade for the recruits will take place later this month.
