Oct 10 – Gib Sams Launches – Helpline Now Open

Gibraltar Sams was officially launched yesterday evening at a reception at No6 Convent Place.

The Chief Minister thanked chairperson and founder Marielou Guerrero and praised her determination in setting up the service in record time.

“We all realise how important it is, as society evolves, that we also evolve the safety net that society provides,” he said.

Ms Guerrero said: “The reception we’ve had from everybody has been absolutely amazing.”

She said that she was proud of the volunteers who had come forward to train as listeners for the Gib Sams helpline adding that they were giving their free time to help this worthy cause.

The Governor Lt Gen Edward Davis, the charity’s patron, said: “If Gibraltar is anything, it’s the choices its people make […] this is a most valuable service within Gibraltar society and I know that the power of the listening you’re going to do is going to help an awful lot of people who will be feeling very distressed.”

Members of FC Boca Gibraltar presented a cheque for £3,900 to Gib Sams which was half of the proceeds collected during their charity futsal tournament held in memory of Maurice Coelho.

The Freephone Helpline 116 123 is now operational from Monday to Thursday from 7pm to 10pm. The hours of service will gradually be extended as volunteers complete their training.
