Jan 30 - Childline To Host Body Image Training Seminar

Childline Gibraltar will next week mark Children’s Mental Health Week by hosting seminars on “Social Media, Body Image and Our Teenagers” aimed at its Helpline volunteers and other practitioners who work with young people.

The seminars will be delivered by Childline Supervisors from the NSPCC, Igor Vidovic and Eleni Kypridemos, who return to Gibraltar following their seminars last year on Suicide and Self-Harm.

Childline Chairperson, Jo Abergel, remarked, ”We are delighted to welcome back Igor and Eleni and look forward to their presentations to help us raise awareness on the very topical issue of the impact of social media on young peoples’ mental health, with a particular focus on Body Image. The seminars have roused great interest locally and both sessions are oversubscribed with representatives joining us from the Department for Education, the Care Agency, the GHA, the RGP and the Youth Service. We are most grateful to the NSPCC for their continued support, as well as to the School of Health Studies for hosting us and the event sponsor.”

Almost a third of the calls received on the Childline Gibraltar Helpline concern a mental health issue, many of which are exacerbated by the proliferation of social media.

The training seminars next week will cover Eating Disorders and Negative Body Image / Body Dysmorphia - the connection and the differences, our critical inner voice, self-esteem, social media distortions and what this means for young people, our relationship with food and body, and control in relation to eating behaviours and disorders.

This event has been made possible thanks to the generous sponsorship of The Alwani Foundation.
