The Government says it notes, “with disappointment”, the European Parliament’s objection, today, to the entry into force of the European Commission’s decision to remove certain jurisdictions, including Gibraltar, from the EU’s list of ‘high-risk’ third-countries with strategic deficiencies as regards anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing (“AML/CFT”).

Aug 21 - Three Teenage Boys Remanded In Custody – All Six Teens Plead Guilty To Watergardens Burglary

There was a violent outburst in the Juvenile Court this afternoon as three teenage boys were remanded in custody after pleading guilty to stealing two mobile phones from Tarik Shipping in Watergardens on Friday morning.

A total of six juveniles, between the ages of 13 and 17, including three girls currently on bail, pleaded guilty to the burglary charge.

From the group, five teenagers also pleaded guilty to obstructing two police officers, while one 14-year-old pleaded not guilty to one charge of handling stolen goods, namely £260 in cash.

Prosecutor James Lennane suggested the three boys be kept in custody following a spate of burglaries they have allegedly committed in recent weeks, adding that the boys had breached their bail conditions which stipulate that they are not allowed to be together.

Mr Lennane added: “Clearly they are a group of friends, and when they get together they commit these offences.”

Patrick Canessa, who was appointed for five of the defendants on legal aid, said one of his clients who was being remanded in custody was kept in cells for the first time and had told his lawyer he did not like it.

Justin Rodriguez, who appeared for the one of the boys, suggested the court impose a 24-hour curfew for his client to ensure he remains in his grandparents’ house.

The Justices of the Peace rejected the lawyers’ requests, saying that the three boys were to be remanded in custody after finding that this offence was committed while on bail for other similar offences last week, and that there were concerns about them surrendering to bail in the future. The boys were remanded in custody, while the three girls were released on bail, to a sum of £250 on their own recognizance.

A pre-sentence report was requested for all six youngsters and the case was adjourned until Monday 11th September.
