Dec 17 – Court Gives Man Chance To Prove He Is Drug Free

A man who pleaded guilty to one count of possession of 5.79 grams cocaine is being given the opportunity to prove to the courts that he has overcome his drug habit over the next six months.

Sasha Garcia appeared at the Supreme Court today for sentencing, but Chief Justice Anthony Dudley adjourned the case for six months to allow the defendant to undergo voluntary random drug tests.

The case dates back to October last year, when police officers stopped a car which belonged to Garcia's friend and found six wrappers containing cocaine. Garcia attended New Mole House Police Station and admitted the drugs were his and for his own consumption, saying he hid the drugs without his friend's knowledge. He later served a six-week prison sentence for burglary at this time last year.

The Crown heard Garcia has since overcome his addiction, and is back at his family business while also developing a good relationship with his daughter, and regaining the trust from his family.

Appearing for his client, Chris Miles raised his concerns about a custodial sentence and asked for a suspended sentence.

He said: “He is a good kid from a good family who got caught up with the wrong people. This is the perfect example of the dangers of drugs.”

The case has been adjourned until 2nd June 2016 for sentencing.

Cecile Gomez appeared for the Crown.
