Jan 29 - Police Arrest Spanish Man On Suspicion Of Fishing Tuna Without A Permit

Royal Gibraltar Police Marine Unit officers have this morning arrested a 55-year-old Spanish male on suspicion of obstructing police and fishing tuna without a valid permit within British Gibraltar Territorial Waters.

The arrest relates to an incident dating back to the 12th October 2015, when the said person (vessel’s owner but at the time travelling as passenger) together with another male (the navigator) failed to comply with requests from Department of the Environment Marine Protection Officers who had challenged suspected illegal tuna fishing activity.

At the time, RGP officers attending in support of their colleagues were obstructed by the Spanish vessel’s occupants, who navigated dangerously whilst being pursued and made good their escape towards Spain.

The individual arrested today has been released on bail with his vessel continuing in Police custody pending further enquiries.
