Feb 08 - Man Accused Of Beating Up Partner Goes On Trial

The trial of a man accused of falsely imprisoning and beating up his former girlfriend started at the Supreme Court this morning.

Benjamin Shaw, 27, faces one count of false imprisonment, one count of common assault by battery and one count of dangerous driving.

The empanelled jury heard that the couple had had a turbulent relationship.

Prosecutor Johann Fernandez appeared for the Crown, and explained that the case dates back to April last year when Shaw and his former partner allegedly had a dispute at their shared home.

Four days later, Shaw was also accused of dangerous driving after he allegedly braked suddenly causing a collision between his car and the car his former girlfriend and their son were in.

Shaw denies all charges.

The trial is expected to continue until Wednesday, with Puisne Judge Karen Prescott Ramagge presiding over the case.

Joelle Wahnon appears for the defendant.
