Mar 02 - New Central Police Station Officially Opened To The Public Today

The new Central Police Station in Casemates House was inaugurated by the Chief Minister Fabian Picardo, the Minister for Justice Gilbert Licudi and the Commissioner of Police Eddie Yome earlier today.

Based in the premises of the old Tourist Information Office, the new location will serve the community as a hub for easy access for people in town.

At the inauguration, Mr Licudi said there has always been a Central Police Station in Gibraltar, which has been used by officers for more than 150 years. The Irish Town facility served as police courts and Magistrates’ Court, before moving to New Mole House in the 90s.

He added: “We saw this as an opportunity to place the substation, the Central Police Station, in the heart of the community, in keeping with the neighbourhood policing that the Commissioner of Police has brought in since his appointment.”

Mr Picardo said this is a demonstration in the government’s continued investment in the Royal Gibraltar Police.

He said: “This facility is much more in the public eye than the Central Police Station had become, and I am delighted that the blue light shows the security and the safety the Royal Gibraltar Police inspire in our community will be very visible.”

Commissioner Yome took the opportunity to thank the government for the use of the premises and added that he hoped the former iconic Central Police Station in Irish Town could be refurbished to its former glory.

He added: “This police station is in the heart of town and we’re very accessible to members of the public and we’re nearby all the restaurants and the entertainment areas and events which take place in Casemates.”

Speaking to YGTV after the inauguration, the Commissioner explained that this location will serve as the first point of call for any complaints that come through, or for lost property, but if a situation needs further investigations it can be passed on to other officers.

The Central Police Station is linked via a network to New Mole House Police Station so in cases of emergency there’s a buzzer system to request further assistance.

During national events or summer Friday nights when a mobile police unit is present, the station will be open and there’s a holding room where suspects can be held until taken to New Mole House Police Station for further enquiries.
