Jun 06 - Man On Trial For Dangerous Driving

A local man accused of dangerous driving went on trial at the Supreme Court today.

Shane Hernandez faces one count of dangerous driving relating to an incident which took place in July 2013.

Prosecutor Kerrin Drago said Hernandez was allegedly driving northbound on Line Wall Road in his black Honda CRX at such a high speed that he caused a collision with another vehicle that was turning left to park in the loading and unloading bays outside Amar’s Bakery.

Mr Drago explained that there was an 11-meter skid mark on the ground, and said that expert evidence showed his rear brakes were not functioning properly. Experts also estimated that Hernandez must have been driving at a minimum of around 43-50 km per hour in a 30 km per hour road to cause that level of damage.

The collision victim was two months pregnant at the time, and said she collapsed after the accident.

The empanelled jury heard from another two witnesses who were present at the time of the alleged incident. They claimed that they heard the defendant’s car rev its engine and the screech of its tires as it skidded when the defendant stepped on the brakes to stop the vehicle.

Hernandez denies the charge.

Justin Phillips appears for the defendant and Puisne Judge Christopher Butler presides over the case.

The trial continues tomorrow.
