Oct 12 - £9K Restaurant Burglar Jailed

A 26-year-old man who admitted stealing more than £9,000 in cash from two restaurants was sentenced to five months at the Magistrates’ Court today.

Jason Santos has been remanded in custody since the two burglaries took place in the summer earlier this year.

Prosecutor Kerrin Drago explained that Santos broke into The Ivy in Ocean Village with a co-accused and stole £2,000 in cash. He was identified on CCTV and, while on police bail, he broke into Pizza Express a month later and stole the safe containing two weeks of takings - worth more than £7,000 - and a tablet.

He was arrested the following day and admitted to police his role in both burglaries.

Appearing for his client, Nick Gomez said his client had been trying to abstain from taking drugs. However, Santos had got involved with drugs again and this had led to the burglaries.

In his mitigation, Mr Gomez added there was no vandalism or trauma caused to anyone or any violence during the burglaries. Mr Gomez did however admit that his client had previous convictions.

Stipendiary Magistrate Charles Pitto sentenced Santos to five months in prison for the Pizza Express burglary, and two months in prison for the burglary committed at The Ivy. Both sentences are to be served concurrently.
