Feb 09 – Spanish Men Fined For RHIB

Five Spanish nationals who were arrested two miles out from Europa Point in a RHIB were fined at the Magistrates’ Court today.

Ceuta residents Jose Alfonso Gonzalez Fernandez, Francisco Jose Cardona Serran, Bilal Chaib Mohamed, Ahmed Tarek Ahmed and Juan Jesus Galan Lopez were arrested yesterday and charged with importing a prohibited item into Gibraltar – a 7.95-metre grey semi rigid hull inflatable boat.

At the Magistrates’ Court this morning, their lawyer Suresh Mahtani said his clients had been very co-operative and that there were no illicit items on their boat.

He said they were on their way to the Alcaidesa Marina in La Linea when they were stopped by the RGP Marine Section officers while on patrol.

Gonzalez Fernandez was fined £2,000 which is to be paid within 45 days, while his co-defendants have six months to pay fines of £1,200 each.
