Sep 26 - Police Trainees Programme

The Royal Gibraltar Police together with the Ministry for Enterprise, Training and Employment are continuing their joint initiative to recruit Police Trainees. The scheme will provide an opportunity for girls and boys, aged 16 or 17, considering a career in policing but who are not yet old enough to join the police to experience working in policing in a safe learning environment.

Trainees take part in a 12-month Training and Development programme which has been specifically designed to give the Trainee an understanding of what life as a Police Officer involves. Trainees will help at community events, promote crime prevention and carry out other tasks that will not involve confrontation with the public.

Trainees will work alongside Police Constables, learning about police work in a balanced training programme that will include classroom-based learning alongside practical learning in a more 'hands-on' environment. There will be opportunities to participate in crime prevention projects, carrying out attachments to the different policing divisions and specialist departments. Trainees will also acquire First Aid knowledge. Although trainees will have no police powers vested upon them, they will be expected to assist their police colleagues in many practical matters and act as observers in operational policing.

Completion of the Trainee Scheme will not guarantee the Trainee a position as a Police Constable at the next recruitment for police officers. However it will provide the trainee with an opportunity to decide whether such a career is right for them and will give them a wealth of police skills and knowledge which should prove useful in the selection process.

The initial Training programme has been designed to take place over 12 months. The six trainees recruited in April of this year are now six months into their tenure. They have received instruction on a variety of policing skills and have accompanied police officers when on routine operational deployments.

To complement the existing cadre of six trainees a further six will now be recruited, bringing the total to twelve. Prospective trainees must be British Citizens and aged 16 or 17. The closing date for applications is the 11th of October, for further information visit www.police.gi/trainees or the Ministry for Enterprise, Training and Employment.
