Nov 21 - RGP Heads Drug Chase at Sea
The Royal Gibraltar Police’s Marine Section thwarted a drug smuggling operation at sea yesterday evening.
At about 9.20pm officers at the time patrolling the Western Anchorage noticed a fast moving vessel heading north, close to the anchored vessels in the area. The vessel which was not showing navigational lights was seen to have four occupants and to be loaded with bales.
The RGP, requested assistance from the Gibraltar Defence Police, informed Guardia Civil of the situation, and immediately gave chase.
The suspect vessel was chased through BGTW in a northerly direction close to the Spanish breakwater and towards the area of Puente Mayorga, where the vessel was beached by its navigator. The four occupants were seen to abandon the vessel and run off the beach.
Guardia Civil were again contacted and shortly after land patrols arrived in the area. The RGP understands that the vessel was found to be a 12 metre RHIB powered by two outboard engines and carrying 55 bales of Cannabis Resin weighing an approximate 1500kg.
