Jan 14 - RGP Officer Cleared Of Rape Charges

Peter Lugnani, the RGP officer who was on trial for having allegedly raped two colleagues, was this afternoon found not guilty of all charges by a unanimous verdict delivered by a jury at the Supreme Court.

The jury found Lugnani not guilty of four counts of rape relating to an incident involving a female police constable on 30th November 2012 in the area of the Rosia Bay anchorage.

Yesterday, Puisne Judge Justice Barrington Black had instructed the jury to find Lugnani not guilty in relation to a separate charge involving a different work colleague in an incident which allegedly occurred between March and April 2009.

Lugnani maintained his innocence throughout the trial insisting that, although the sexual acts in question had taken place, they were consensual.

The defendant was represented by John Causer and Patrick Canessa, with Karl Tonna and Robert Fischel QC appearing for the Crown.
