Jan 15 - Customs Make Huge Cigarette Haul Following Smuggler’s Escape
Customs officers this morning disrupted an attempt to unlawfully export a commercial quantity of cigarettes
The incident saw a Spanish registered vehicle driving into the loop exit road to Spain at Winston Churchill Avenue where it was stopped and challenged by Customs officers.
The driver, a Spanish national, was challenged and arrested when an initial search of the car indicated it to contain 95,700 cigarettes, the equivalent to over 480 cartons. The man resisted arrest and made good his escape by running to Spain.
The cigarettes and the vehicle were seized by Customs who are currently carrying out an investigation into the matter.
