Feb 26 - 20 Months In Prison For Burglar Who Stole £40K Worth Of Jewellery

A Spanish national was this morning sentenced to spend 20 months in prison after having stolen jewellery believed to be worth up to £40,000. Angel Alberto Alfaya Gregorio, a resident of Algeciras, was arrested in March last year and charged with one count of burglary. Alfaya Gregorio pleaded guilty to having stolen the items from a residence he was working at over a period of several months.

Puisne Judge Barrington Black said that it was not an opportunistic crime as Alfaya Gregorio had planned to steal the valuable possessions during periods when he knew the property would be vacant. He also stressed that the items were of great sentimental value to the family and had never been recovered

Justin Philips, who appeared for the accused, said that his client had expressed “sincere regrets and remorse” for his actions and that he had been completely honest concerning the details of the crime.

In sentencing, Judge Barrington Black said that domestic burglaries were rarely dealt with in the courts because of the lengthy sentences they attracted, adding that he was determined to continue to hand out “deterrent punishment.”

Judge Barrington Black said that he had taken into account Alfaya Gregorio’s early guilty plea and had deducted a third from the sentence reducing the time to be served from 30 months to 20. He also noted that Alfaya Gregorio had already spent 11 months on remand which would also count towards his overall sentence. Johann Fernandez appeared for the Crown.
