Feb 28 - RGP Officers Injured in Sea Chase

rgpYesterday afternoon three RGP vessels were caught in a chase with two RHIBs making their way into the bay, heading North. One of the RGP vessels applied sirens and beacons and maintained an interception course and saw that the two RHIBs were navigating together side by side at a fast speed. At this stage the 10-meter RHIB changed course and began went on a collision course to the RGP vessel, which had to take evasive action in order to avoid the collision.

 

Once the said suspect RHIBs where in Spanish territorial waters the chase was discontinued and the Guardia Civil was contacted and they deployed their vessels to tackle the said RHIBs.

As a result of the evasive manoeuvres two officers sustained injuries; one had a torn left bicep distal tendon and the other suffered bruising to his right calf muscle. The officer with the torn left bicep attended St. Bernard’s Hospital where he was released after being treated.

The Guardia Civil claims that one of the RHIBs collided with a GC vessel, causing two Guardia Civil officers to be thrown into the sea. It is reported that a total of 19 persons were arrested by the Guardia Civil in connection with this incident, the arrests included persons who were on land in the area of the Guadarranque River.
