Jun 05 - RGP Assists Guardia Civil In Drugs Chase
The Royal Gibraltar Police’s Marine Section assisted the Guardia Civil in thwarting a drug smuggling operation at sea in the early hours of yesterday morning.
At about 00:15hrs officers on Wednesday the 4th of June the officers were contacted by Guardia Civil, requesting assistance to intercept a suspect vessel which was heading towards Europa Point. The Guardia Civil had intercepted the vessel off the Moroccan coast and after challenging it were in the process of collecting suspected bales of Cannabis Resin which had been thrown overboard by the crew.
The RGP officers headed out to sea where they intercepted the vessel in British Gibraltar Territorial Waters off Eastern Beach, at the time it was travelling northwards. The navigator of the vessel did not comply with requests to stop for police, conducting evasive manoeuvres and continuing into Spanish waters.
The suspect vessel was chased in a northerly direction and was seen to enter La Atunara Port in La Linea. Following which Guardia Civil land patrols were seen to arrive and detain the persons onboard.
The RGP understands that the vessel was found to be a sports boat with two high powered outboard engines, that fifteen bales of suspected cannabis resin were recovered and that two persons were arrested.
